The journey of healing I committed to in April of 2001 has been filled with backpacking trips, creative expression, peaceful contemplation, drum circles, sweat lodges and the realization of childhood dreams. At the time of my cancer diagnosis, I knew that I needed to make some immediate changes. Unwilling to relinquish control over the routines that dominated my life, I spent the next eight years choked with fear. Eventually, I came to realize how far I distanced myself from my hopes and dreams.
Staring into the abyss of the unknown was both terrifying and exciting. How would I make a living? Where was I going? What was my plan? Leaving the world of teaching, home ownership, health insurance, retirement and “certainty” was a decision that left me alone. My logical mind stood in defiant opposition of this ill-conceived healing quest.
As each day passed while traveling the desert southwest, a new piece of the puzzle that I was putting together would appear. All of the conversations, journeys, gifts and experiences led to my first picture in the summer of 2001. As my travels continued, the opportunity to interpret my journey through the creation of photoart grew exponentially.
Sharing the record of my travels through illumineering.com grew from conversations with people about the “hidden messages” in the art I was creating. The launch of illumineering.com is the cornerstone of my dream of sharing my journey of healing and discovery with the world.
